The Chebucto Community Singers was formed in 1974 under the leadership of Kaye Pottie. A SATB choir of 40+ members, it sings a repertoire of folk, pop, gospel, classical to Broadway music.
Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings from 7-9pm at Hillside United Church, 12 Flamingo Drive, Halifax, usually from mid-September to mid-May. The choir normally performs 3-4 concerts per year.

Position Summary
Chebucto Community Singers is seeking an enthusiastic, collaborative, and skilled Choral Conductor to provide artistic leadership for our community choir. The successful candidate will inspire singers of varied musical backgrounds, cultivate a positive and inclusive rehearsal environment, and work closely with the volunteer Board of Directors to support the choir’s artistic vision and long-term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities
Artistic Leadership
- Plan and lead weekly rehearsals in a positive, engaging, and organized manner
- Conduct concerts and public performances throughout the season
- Select varied and accessible repertoire aligned with the choir’s mission, values, and skill level, limiting religious pieces
- Foster musical growth and confidence among singers of diverse abilities and experiences
- Provide vocal and musical instruction that supports healthy singing and ensemble development
- Encourage creativity, participation, and enjoyment within rehearsals and performances
Collaborative Leadership
- Work collaboratively with the Board of Directors on artistic planning, concert preparation, scheduling, and organizational priorities
- Participate in season planning and contribute ideas that support choir growth and community engagement
- Support a culture of respectful communication, inclusivity, and shared leadership
- Collaborate with accompanist, guest musicians, and volunteers as needed
Community Engagement
- Help strengthen the choir’s presence within the metro community through performances and outreach opportunities
- Support initiatives that encourage participation, belonging, and intergenerational connection through music
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- Experience conducting choirs, community ensembles, or vocal groups
- Strong rehearsal leadership and communication skills
- Knowledge of vocal technique and choral pedagogy
- Ability to work effectively with singers of varying musical backgrounds
- A collaborative and inclusive leadership style
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Appreciation for diverse musical genres and traditions
- Ability to inspire enthusiasm, confidence, and musical growth
- Flexibility and openness to adjust repertoire, rehearsal plans and conducting approach based on feedback received
The following would be considered assets:
- Formal music education or conducting training
- Experience working with volunteer or community-based arts organizations
- Accompaniment or keyboard skills
- Experience programming diverse and engaging repertoire
Compensation
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Details will be discussed with shortlisted candidates.
Commitment
- Music selection and preseason planning
- Weekly rehearsals from September through May
- Attendance at concerts, dress rehearsals, and selected choir events
- Participation in planning meetings with the Board as required
